“Usonia”

Frank Lloyd Wright conceptualized the idea of the Usonian style. The concept was based on the goal to create homes to achieve the aesthetic richness, the sense of connection to nature, and the spaciousness of Wright's earlier Prairie Style house in a small, affordable, and easily built package for the average middle-class family. As you enter the garden, you immediately get a sense of Wright’s influence. The use of the double columns, the details of the hand crafted light fixtures and the etched glass in the custom built gates to the hand crafted planters.

Once you enter the garden you are drawn to the sound of the water feature, which was created using an exact replica of Wright’s prairie planter. As you walk under the pergola, you notice the attention to detail, in the intricate paver pattern influenced by one of Wright’s stained glass windows, and the details of the cutouts in the pergola. As you stand in the garden, you get a sense of being in a well-designed space. The use of color, the massing of similar shrubs, the canopy of the trees, and the different textures they create. As you exit the main garden area you are drawn to the focal point of the garden sprite, another replica of Wright’s original design for the Midway Gardens Exhibition.
